Rebrand Ideas/Name Change

I would like to rename the project. I want to put more effort into WTF and increase the user base by a lot. I personally find the name vulgar and I think it will hold it back a bit. This post is a continuation of this GitHub Discussion.

If you have a name idea, please post it here. One name per post. Please include:

  1. How the name would look like for display purposes, such as on the website, documentation, etc, e.g., WTFUtil
  2. How the name would like for the CLI command, e.g., wtfutil
  3. The reason for the name.
  4. The CLI name CAN’T be a default command/binary already used on Debian/Fedora repositories, macOS, or Homebrew.
  5. The name CAN be a name already in use, as long as #4 is good and the name isn’t another similar tool.

I’ve started this convo on GitHub more than 6 months ago. I would like to decide on a name by May (next-month) as the name change will take time.

  1. Display name: Tūī (more simply stylized as Tui)
  2. CLI name: tui
  3. In tech, a “tui” usually stands for a terminal UI (user interface). WTF is a tui. Tūī is also the name of a bird in New Zealand. I figure this gives the name double meaning, and we can use the bird as a logo.
  4. While “tui” tools are talked about in general, there is no tui command by default in macOS, Homebrew, or Ubuntu.
  5. I haven’t found a terminal dashboard with this name.
  1. Display name: Metro Dashboard
  2. CLI name: metro
  3. Windows 8 released with a new UI/design language called Metro. The OS did not do well but when I look at that design, I think of WTF boards:
    .
  4. Microsoft does not use the name. There is no metro command by default in macOS, Homebrew, or Ubuntu.
  5. I haven’t found a terminal dashboard with this name.
  1. Display name: Vantage or Vantage Point
  2. CLI name: vantage or vp
  3. A name that stands for vantage point. Our tools provides you a good view into things. :man_shrugging:
  4. The only major place I’ve seen the name taken is as a pip (Python) package. In that case, the package/software is deprecated.
  5. I haven’t found a terminal dashboard with this name.
